چکیده

Introduction Absenteeism has been considered as a potential indicator for the early detection of infectious disease outbreaks in population, especially in primary schools. However, in practice this data are often characterized by an excess of zeros and spatial heterogeneity. In a project on integrated syndromic surveillance system (ISSC) in rural China(1), Random effect zero-inflated Poisson (RE-ZIP) model was applied to simultaneously quantify the spatial heterogeneity for “occurrence” and “intensity” on school absenteeism data.

Applying Zero-inflated Mixed Model to School Absenteeism Surveillance in Rural China

Methods Data for this study was obtained from the web-based data of ISSC in 62 primary schools in two counties of Jiangxi province, China from April 1th, 2012 to June 30st, 2012. The ZIMM was used to explore: 1)the temporal and spatial variability regarding occurrence and intensity of absenteeism simultaneously, and 2) the heterogeneity among the reporting primary schools by introducing random ...

Evaluation of school absenteeism data for early outbreak detection, New York City

BACKGROUND School absenteeism data may have utility as an early indicator of disease outbreaks, however their value should be critically examined. This paper describes an evaluation of the utility of school absenteeism data for early outbreak detection in New York City (NYC). METHODS To assess citywide temporal trends in absenteeism, we downloaded three years (2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04) of da...

Estimating the Effectiveness of Early Control Measures through School Absenteeism Surveillance in Observed Outbreaks at Rural Schools in Hubei, China

BACKGROUND School absenteeism is a common data source in syndromic surveillance, which allows for the detection of outbreaks at an early stage. Previous studies focused on its correlation with other data sources. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of control measures based on early warning signals from school absenteeism surveillance in rural Chinese schools. METHODS A school absen...

Illness among schoolchildren during influenza season: effect on school absenteeism, parental absenteeism from work, and secondary illness in families.

BACKGROUND High attack rates of Influenzavirus among school-aged children tend to be expected to cause significant disruption of usual activities at school and at home. OBJECTIVE To quantify the effect of influenza season on illness episodes, school absenteeism, medication use, parental absenteeism from work, and the occurrence of secondary illness in families among a cohort of children enrol...

Count Data Models in SAS ®

Poisson regression has been widely used to model count data. However, it is often criticized for its restrictive assumption of equi-dispersion, meaning equality between the variance and the mean. In real-life applications, count data often exhibits over-dispersion and excess zeroes. While Negative binomial regression is able to model count data with over-dispersion, both Hurdle (Mullahy, 1986) ...
